The TLOD Story
Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc. (TLOD) was founded on September 8, 1964, in Texas, as a nonprofit educational and humanitarian organization. Eight visionary women—Mrs. Franchell Boswell, Mrs. Ina Bolton Brown, Mrs. Augusta R. Cash, Major Ozell M. Dean, Mrs. Willie Lee Glass, Mrs. La Verne R. Madlock, Mrs. Ruth Payne Smith, and Mrs. Georgia B. Presswood Nelson—came together with a shared commitment to community service, marking the beginning of the TLOD journey.

The story began when Mrs. Willie Lee Glass, serving as the “First Lady” at Texas College in Tyler, Texas, received an invitation from Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson, First Lady of the United States. Unable to attend, she called upon her former student, Major Ozell M. Dean, to represent her. Major Dean’s attendance at this historic luncheon inspired her to act. With the support of Mrs. Glass and Mrs. Franchell Boswell, she rallied other women to address the challenges youth faced during the mid-1960s.

On June 4, 1964, at Texas College, TLOD held its first meeting to establish its mission: to unite the talents and skills of distinguished women in service to address the moral and social issues confronting youth. This vision grew into a powerful movement, forming what is now an internationally respected public service organization.

From its founding focus on youth to an expanded mission that includes empowering women, supporting senior citizens, beautifying communities, and fostering meaningful partnerships, TLOD has remained steadfast in its purpose. Programs like Top Teens of America (TTA) and partnerships with organizations like the NCNW, NAACP, and UNCF reflect its ongoing commitment to service. TLOD also awards scholarships, supports the March of Dimes, and collaborates with Top Teens in peer education initiatives.

Today, TLOD thrives with thousands of dedicated members across the nation. These resourceful and passionate women represent a diverse network committed to shaping positive change for more than 4,000 Top Teens and countless communities.

Through every program, project, and partnership, TLOD remains true to its mission of “Serving Youth and Adults,” leaving an enduring legacy of service, strength, and community impact.
